Curriculum, Tiers, and Other Things Every Parent Should Know

What Does it All Mean?

  • Standards- these are the actual skills, information, and content we teach children. Standards are developed by the state.
  • Priority Standards-  these are standards that have the broadest impact
  • Supporting Standard- these standards support the overall learning but tend to be more isolated with a smaller impact.
  • Curriculum- the tools used to teach the standards. Textbooks, programs, etc.
  • Core Instruction- what every student at Southwest Elementary gets every day they are in school.
  • MTSS- Multi-tiered System of support. This is a series of increasing interventions teachers use to support students.
  • Tier 1 of MTSS- Core instruction. What we do every day.
  • Tier 2 of MTSS- what we provide for students who are struggling to gain knowledge in core instruction. This tier introduces interventions and strategies beyond the core.
  • Tier 3 of MTSS- for students who continue to struggle at Tier 2. This Tier provides very intense interventions and strategies
